Why Should you Exercise Outdoors?

Why should you exercise outdoors? Well the question should really be why shouldn’t you? It’s easy to get stuck in the same old routine, especially in the winter with the snow and cold. But in Vancouver we’re lucky. We have limitless ‘sea to sky‘  possibilities when it comes to exercise and fun activities. Most people in Vancouver take total advantage of this, it’s one of the best things about living here. In Vancouver it is more acceptable to take off from work early to get some cardio and Vitamin D, than it is to get trapped in the viral world and let your health and fitness slip away into that nasty black hole commonly known as a computer… or compute-ta-gur as my nephew would call it… either way, I feel very happy about living in a city that promotes such a healthy lifestyle!

Recently there has been growing interest in the benefits of outdoor exercise… Remember when your mom used to tell you to go play outside and when you complained because it was freezing and Nintendo just came out and you’d ask “but whyyyy??”. She’d tell you, “because, it’s good for you… and I said so”. Well as it turns out (again) mom was right, it is good for you and science is proving it. A recent article from Science News about these benefits says, “The study found that most trials showed an improvement in mental well-being: compared with exercising indoors, exercising in natural environments was associated with greater feelings of revitalization, increased energy and positive engagement, together with decreases in tension, confusion, anger and depression. Participants also reported greater enjoyment and satisfaction with outdoor activity and stated that they were more likely to repeat the activity at a later date.” Read More.
